What is a buffy coat?

The buffy coat is the fraction of an anticoagulated blood sample that contains most of the white blood cells and platelets, situated between the plasma and red blood cells after centrifugation. Comprising less than 1% of total blood volume, buffy coats are rich in white blood cells and platelets, essential for immunology and haematology research.
